Vase for Dead Flowers

Movement in a solid form is how I would describe this piece. Collapsed on purpose when I made it. While it embraces the movement yet frozen in time. It is also in a state of decay. That’s why I named it the Vase for Dead Flowers.

Description

Movement in a solid form is how I would describe this Intriguing Collapsing Porcelain Vase. Collapsed on purpose when I made it. While it embraces the movement yet frozen in time. It is also in a state of decay. That’s why I named it the Vase for Dead Flowers.

My work is about the overall aesthetic, not so much about the ceramic. My work could only be made using the slipcasting method. The additive shell that builds up inside a plaster mold when the liquified clay is poured in (see my article on Slipcasting).

This piece was made in a plaster mold of about 150 parts. I intentionally made severe overhangs that were not supported. I coaxed collapse after I removed the piece from the mold. The fire of the kiln added it’s effects, especially to more collapse. There are tears and small openings throughout the piece. Yet, it holds water in the bottom 1/3 and can hold flowers, even living ones!
